  • The endoscope is inserted via the mouth, passing a flexible endoscope through the oesophagus into the stomach and duodenum (first part of the small bowel). This is performed as a day procedure, meaning you will not need to stay overnight in hospital. The procedure usually takes under 15 minutes and is performed under sedation (not a full general anaesthetic) administered by an experienced Specialist Anaesthetist. You will spend a total of three to four hours in the hospital. You will need to be driven home by a friend or family member. You will not be able to drive or operate heavy machinery for 24 hours after the procedure. Gastroscopies are an extremely safe procedure and no pain or discomfort is felt by the patient during the procedure. Dr Andrew Russell will speak with you once you’re awake and alert before discharge to discuss the outcome of the procedure.

How do I enquire about Endoscopy?

View

Endoscopy procedures require a referral from your doctor (such as your GP) to qualify for health insurance or medicare.

You can ask your doctor for a referral to have Dr Andrew Russell perform your procedure.

A gastroscopy is a quick and gentle procedure used to look at the upper digestive tract, including the oesophagus and stomach. It can help identify the cause of symptoms like heartburn, nausea or abdominal discomfort, giving you clear answers about what’s going on. The procedure is performed under sedation to keep you comfortable, and most patients are surprised by how straightforward it is. At Capricorn Bariatric & General Surgery, Dr Andrew Russell and the team are focused on making the experience as easy and reassuring as possible, from your first appointment through to your recovery.
