Thyroid Surgery

This normally comprises removal of half the thyroid gland (lobectomy) or the whole gland. The main indications for thyroid gland resection are:

Thyroid cancer.

Diagnosis of a solid thyroid nodule.

Large, symptomatic multinodular goiter (MNG).

Management of Graves Disease if medical therapy has failed.
This surgery normally requires a hospital stay of 1-2 days with patients generally recovering very quickly.

The vast majority of patients requiring parathyroid gland removal are having it performed to treat a parathyroid adenoma, a small tumor of the gland which causes a high calcium level in the blood, and can occasionally cause other medical conditions. These glands are very close to the thyroid gland (hence their name) and are usually only 1-2mm in size. These small tumors are identified with special scans (CT, Nuclear Medicine and ultrasound) which have greatly aided surgeons in finding and removing these small lesions. Once again there will occasionally be cases that are best referred to specialist Endocrine surgeons in Brisbane but Dr Andrew Russell takes great care in identifying patients best treated elsewhere.
Dr Andrew Russell has practiced surgery on the thyroid and parathyroid glands his whole surgical career, but once again recognizes that there occasionally is the need to refer some patients to dedicated sub-specialists or Endocrine Surgeons.
